Mozambiquan music stars Massukos arrive for the first time in the UK to take part in the Make Poverty History Campaign. Mozambiquan music stars Massukos arrive for the first time in the UK to take part in the Make Poverty History Campaign. The campaign is focusing on Africa in a bid to persuade G8 leaders to make serious commitments to the continent. Water, sanitation and hygiene practice are some of the gravest challenges facing the developing world and this film explores how Massukos use their music to draw attention to these issues. Massukos are closely linked with Mozambique's award-winning development agency Estamos and they regularly use the power of music to deliver simple life-saving message about hygiene, sanitation and HIV/AIDs to rural and urban communities in their country.
Here in the UK, they take their message to more than 100,000 people at the Make Poverty History Rally, as well as to the BBC Africa Live event at the British Museum and UNICEF's C8 Children's conference. Along the way they encounter: Rt.Hon. Gordon Brown MP; Sir Bob Geldof; DJ Charlie Gillett; and many others. Feliciano dos Santos – the central character in the film – is an inspirational man who has spent much of his life campaigning for basic human rights in Mozambique.
Resounding with phenomenally beautiful music, this powerful and emotive fly-on-the-wall documentary carries many pertinent messages. It includes the London bombings of July 7th 2005 – a stark reminder for Massukos of the civil war that Mozambique suffered for 17 years. The film ends on a very positive note with Santos accepting The Goldman Environmental Prize (2008), a nobel prize equivalent for grassroots activists.
